Xel-Há: nature and fun in the Riviera Maya

On your next trip to the Riviera Maya, don’t miss one of its most entertaining experiences—whether alone, as a couple or with family: the Xel-Há natural water park. This excursion is essential for those seeking more than a simple day in nature, offering a complete sensory adventure. Here you can snorkel in crystalline waters, zip-line above lush scenery, drift along gentle rivers, swim in natural pools and encounter native fauna. Your admission also includes traditional cuisine, premium drinks and a sunbed area designed for pure relaxation amid the surroundings.

1. What is Xel-Há?

Xel-Há is a natural aquatic park nestled in the heart of the Riviera Maya, just minutes from Tulum. This vast open-air aquarium is famed for its immense crystal-clear lagoon, where the fresh currents of underground rivers merge seamlessly with the salt waters of the Caribbean Sea.

The park delivers a truly ecotourism-focused experience: winding rivers, rainforest trails, cenotes, panoramic viewpoints, zip lines over shimmering waters and serene natural pools. Without question, it is the ultimate all-inclusive experience to immerse yourself in a spectacular aquatic ecosystem within a safe, enchanting setting.

2. History of Xel-Há

The Mayan name Xel-Há translates as “where the water is born,” a poetic reference to the bay where the fresh currents of underground rivers flow into and mingle with the Caribbean Sea.

Archaeological evidence suggests it was once among the most significant coastal settlements of eastern Yucatán during the pre-Columbian era. Here, inhabitants sustained inland cities like Cobá through fishing and the gathering of molluscs and shellfish.

Today, the site has been reimagined as an ecotourism sanctuary, dedicated to protecting endangered species such as the manatee, queen conch and sea turtle.

3. Main attractions at Xel-Há

Spanning over 84 hectares, Xel-Há offers a wealth of experiences to suit every taste—from the thrill of a 40-metre waterslide to the pleasure of raising a glass in a restaurant with sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea. For the best experience, download the park’s mobile app, where an interactive map makes it easy to explore every corner of this spectacular setting.

Water activities

The main attraction of Xel-Há lies in its waters, ideal for snorkelling and swimming among tropical fish, manta rays and vibrant corals. You can also glide across the bay on zip lines, leap from platforms into the clear lagoon, or drift along natural rivers winding through mangroves. All equipment is provided, with specialists at every access point ensuring a safe and seamless experience.

Gran Caleta

cenote

The Gran Caleta is the crown jewel of Xel-Há—a breathtaking natural aquarium with crystal-clear visibility, perfect for swimming or snorkelling amid the vibrant biodiversity of its waters.

Encircling the vast pool, the erosion of limestone rock has sculpted striking grottos and passageways, their walls adorned with fossils of long-extinct molluscs. These hidden corners are ideal for cooling off and pausing to admire the distinctive underground scenery of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Cenotes

No visit to Quintana Roo is complete without witnessing the majesty of its sacred cenotes. At Xel-Há, two sites of extraordinary beauty await—Paradise and Adventure. As they lie within a protected reserve, swimming is not permitted, preserving their pristine and mystical aura.

Faro Mirador

The Faro Mirador is one of the park’s most iconic landmarks. Rising more than 40 metres high, it grants sweeping panoramic views of the jungle, the Caribbean Sea, and the bay. For added thrill, descend via its spiral slide, a playful adventure enjoyed by both adults and children alike.

Xel-Há River

Drifting along the Xel-Há River is among the park’s most serene experiences. You can swim at ease with a life jacket or float gently on an inflatable tube, letting the current guide you. The journey winds through mangroves, floating walkways and lush vegetation, all within a setting of extraordinary natural beauty.

Piedra del Valor

Craving a rush of adrenaline? The Piedra del Valor is a natural rock platform where the boldest visitors leap into the turquoise waters from several metres high. No prior experience is needed—only a spark of courage and decisiveness to embrace the thrill.

Mayan Cave

The Mayan Cave is a covered cenote distinguished by its remarkable luminosity and acoustics. This striking rock formation invites visitors to reflect on the profound role of the underground world in Mayan cosmology, where it was revered as a gateway to the afterlife.

4. Activities for kids in Xel-Há

Xel-Há is an ideal destination for families, with areas thoughtfully designed for younger visitors. In the children’s zone, little ones can delight in slides, water games and supervised shallow pools.

Beyond play, engaging ecotourism activities introduce them to sustainability and conservation, from Dolphin Cove and the Manatee Sanctuary to the Nursery, Meliponary and Pink Snail Sanctuary.
