Visiting Menorca with children is a great holiday plan. The island combines nature, safety, short distances, and a relaxed pace that is perfectly suited for family trips. There's no need to rush or cram in activities: simply alternate between beaches and easy walks so that adults and children alike can enjoy themselves.
1. Calm and Safe Beaches
One of Menorca's greatest attractions for families is its beaches, with their shallow waters and fine sand. Many coves in the south of the island are sheltered from the wind and offer an ideal environment in which children can swim freely, play on the shore, or explore the seabed with snorkelling gear. Access is usually easy, and the natural surroundings help you relax and enjoy yourself.
The key is to choose wide, well-protected beaches, especially if you're travelling with young children, and go early in the morning or late in the afternoon during the summer months.
2. Camí de Cavalls: a tailor-made adventure
The Camí de Cavalls hiking trail encircles the entire island, and its twenty stages are easily manageable for families. Walking along this ancient path is an excellent way to introduce children to nature, discover different landscapes, and explain the island's defensive history in a simple and engaging way.
Some sections run close to the sea, while others cross fields and wooded areas, allowing the route to be adapted to the age and energy levels of the group.
3. Charming harbours and sunset strolls
Menorca's harbours are lively and pleasant places for a family outing. Watching the boats arrive and the movement of the water whilst leisurely strolling along the docks is a simple yet delightful activity to enjoy with children. As evening falls, these spaces offer comfortable walks, even with pushchairs, in a relaxed atmosphere. They also provide an opportunity to introduce young children to the island's maritime traditions and its close connections with the Mediterranean.
4. Lighthouses and landscapes that pique our curiosity
Known as the island of the five lighthouses, these locations in Menorca offer an ideal way to spend quality time with the family. Many of them are situated in open settings, with sweeping views of the sea and the Menorcan landscape. Visiting a lighthouse is the perfect excuse to share stories of sailors, observe the horizon, and enjoy spectacular sunsets without having to travel far. These open spaces allow children to move around freely while adults can enjoy the surroundings.
5. Discovering Nature
Menorca is an excellent place to spark children's curiosity about nature. Its ravines, country lanes, wetlands, and open fields offer constant opportunities to observe flora and fauna, especially birds. You don’t need to book organized activities as the island itself is like an open-air classroom.
6. Human-scale cities
The island's main towns and cities are comfortable, safe, and easy to explore on foot. Free of heavy traffic, their old towns are great for leisurely strolls, discovering quiet squares, and frequent stops without the journey becoming tedious for young children. Furthermore, local life and its relaxed atmosphere significantly reduce travel stress. Spending the morning at the beach and taking a leisurely stroll through the city in the afternoon is often a winning combination.
