Be captivated by the colors of the traditional markets on the island.
Embark on a fascinating journey through the markets of Menorca, where tradition and modernity come together to make an unforgettable experience. The Mercat des Peix de Mahón and the Municipal Market of Ciutadella, known as Sa Plaça des Peix, are famous for their atmosphere and their excellent offering of fresh fish and seafood. On the other hand, the street markets and craft markets have turned into fascinating venues where, on top of local products, you can enjoy live performances, exhibitions and cultural activities for every audience.
Going shopping in Ciutadella
Craft market at Cathedral square
If you decide to visit the Ciutadella cathedral, around it you will find this charming street market, ideal for discovering small treasures of local craftwork and finding a unique souvenir of your travels on the island. The designs of the talented Menorcan creators include the famous Menorcan sandals, the emblematic footwear seen on every celebrity today, jewelry made by hand in silver and gold, ceramics made with island clay and excellent leather products.
Firac
The Firac is the best hippie street market, where the artisans of the island exhibit their magnificent creations. There are jewelers, musical instrument makers, fashion designers, plastic artists and booksellers. It is open from 8 p.m. to midnight and offers live performances in a vibrant, bohemian atmosphere while you stroll down the Costa Marina.
Mercado de Capllonc
El Mercado de Capllonc is the perfect option for summer nights. Open everyday between 7 p.m. and midnight (on weekends it stays open until 1 in the morning), you will find a variety of stands offering seasonal local products and Menorcan crafts. There is often live music and cultural activities to suit all tastes.
Going shopping in Mahon
Mercado Claustro del Carmen
El Mercado Claustro del Carmen was built in the 18th century as a building connected to the church of the same name. However, during the confiscation (1835) it lost its religious use and today its walls and courtyards hold all kinds of cultural manifestations, as well as a food market. On the first floor are the traditional island product stands and the second floor has cultural events and exhibitions. Finally, the outdoor patio, in the center, offers interesting music programs with a variety of concerts featuring both national and international artists.
Mercat de Peix de Maó
This emblematic market was built between 1926 and 1927 as an alternative for selling fish at the claustro del Carmen, which was exclusively for selling meat and vegetables. Since then, it has been the main spot to sell this product, although today there are also places to enjoy delicious tapas, pinchos and wine. After a visit to this special fish shop, you can walk through the nearby port or see the spectacular buildings of the historical center, such as the Main Theater, city hall or the church of Santa María, from the 18th century.
Going shopping in Es Mercadal
Centre Artesanal de Menorca
This space, located in the guardhouse of the old barracks of Es Mercadal, is a center for the recovery and exhibition of local products. The venue has a permanent exhibition area and a store where you can purchase artisan creations that are accredited by the Consell Insular de Menorca, certifying their authenticity, quality and origin. If you are looking for a unique souvenir of your time on the island, this is the place to find it.
