Let yourself be captivated by the idyllic beaches of Santo Domingo.
In the eastern Dominican Republic are the most beautiful beaches of Hispaniola, famous for their coral reefs and beautiful sunsets.
A few kilometers from Santo Domingo are some of the most spectacular beaches of the Dominican Republic: Boca Chica and Guayacanes, with their calm, shallow waters, ideal for doing water sports as a family; Juan Dolio, perfect for enjoying a long stroll by the sea; and Nizao, for nature lovers.
These beaches are also known for their lively atmosphere, their beach markets, and for having the best fish restaurants, where you can taste anything from spectacular lobster to the traditional recipes of creole cuisine.
Boca Chica
Boca Chica is considered the capital’s main beach because of how close it is to Santo Domingo. One kilometer and a half long and protected by a large coral reef, it looks like a giant natural swimming pool. Its calm, shallow waters are also greatly enjoyed by families, who come on weekends to practice all kinds of sports.
Among the attractions of this beach are its magnificent fresh fish and seafood restaurants, as well as the exclusive clubs on the eastern edge of the town. Along its coast is La Matica, a mangrove key inhabited by many birds, that you can reach by swimming carefully from the main beach.
Playa de Guayacanes
The small fishing village of Guayacanes has a beautiful white sand beach, with a couple of restaurants and a few houses. Calm and far from the hustle and bustle, the beach stands out thanks to its shallow, tropical waters, perfect for discovering the abundant marine diversity by snorkeling or scuba diving. We recommend bringing sandals, since some areas are rocky. Guayacanes is the perfect place for unplugging under the sun or enjoying a pleasant sunset walk.
Playa de Juan Dolio
Also located in the eastern Dominican Republic is this idyllic beach surrounded by large palm trees and a spectacular coral reef. It has calm areas for enjoying a relaxing swim and others with waves for surfing or windsurfing. Its coasts, the setting of historic looting and shipwrecks, guard incredible underwater treasures that can be visited on fun diving sessions. In the town there are agencies where you can set this up and find the necessary equipment.
Playa Caribe
Between Boca Chica and Juan Dolio is another sensational beach for surfing, Playa Caribe. It is a beautiful half-moon cove, well-known for its waves. Although its water requires caution, it is the ideal place to relax and disconnect from the ruckus of other beaches, since it is located far from buildings and tourist areas. The best idea to enjoy it to the max is to rent a hammock and let yourself be rocked by the gentle breeze, while you enjoy the spectacular setting of the Caribbean sea.
Playa de Palenque
Playa de Palenque is a spectacular natural area surrounded by palm trees and beautiful mangroves. Located at the south of San Cristóbal, its sea beds, populated with exotic, diverse species, make you want to scuba dive or go snorkeling. If you prefer a more relaxed agenda, on one side of the beach you will find cute huts where you can have an authentic Dominican cocktail made with fresh squeezed fruit juice.
Playa de Nizao
Ecotourism lovers will find at Nizao beach a paradise of lakes, rivers and mangroves. Forgotten for years by tourists, it remains a small gem of white sand and warm water. Very close to it are the Dunas de Baní, an authentic desert in the middle of the Dominican Republic, categorized as a Biosphere Reserve. It is the perfect excursion to take with the littlest ones, since during the visit you can spot many species local to these dry, saline environments, such as iguanas.
Playa la Caleta
Very close to Santo Domingo (fifteen minutes in taxi or one hour by bus) is the beautiful beach of La Caleta, in a town adjacent to La Romana. In the summer, it is the favorite destination of the Dominicans because of its natural charm and, above all, the quality and ambiance of its restaurants, where you can try the famous fried fish with plantain or yaniqueque (fried flour dough) with an ice-cold beer. To access the swimming area, you must negotiate a strip of rock and gravel, so it is recommended that you wear flip flops or sandals to get there more easily.
Playa Juanillo
Playa Juanillo, considered one of the best beaches in the country, is a true paradise with kilometers of white sand, enormous palm trees and turquoise waters. The Caribbean colors are combined with such perfection that it looks like a postcard. It also offers an excellent selection of bars and restaurants that serve delicious cocktails and local food.
At the beach, you can do many activities, like play volleyball, snorkel, kayak and kite surf, thanks to the excellent wind conditions. However, if you prefer to simply relax and unplug, you can also enjoy a relaxing swim in its crystal-clear waters.
