Highlights: Santo Domingo has the best of the Caribbean: dreamy beaches, exuberant nature and vibrant nights for dancing to the rhythm of bachata.
The Dominican Republic covers approximately 70% of the island of Hispaniola, the second largest in the Caribbean. Located between Cuba, Jamaica and Puerto Rico, just below the Tropic of Cancer, it has an excellent climate year round, with highs around 32˚C and lows of 23˚C in the early morning, which can get down to 19˚C in the winter.
When we think of this Caribbean country, our mind goes straight to fine white sand beaches and clear waters. But Santo Domingo is much more than that: it is a modern city that has been able to fuse the historical riches of the Colonial Area with the innovation of the shopping centers, art galleries and nightlife. Walking down its cobblestone streets, you can admire the historical past of the city through impressive Spanish buildings such as the First Cathedral of the Americas, the Alcázar de Colón and the Museo de Casas Reales. They are all surrounded by corner stores and terraces where bachata is king and cocktails with authentic Dominican rum are served.
A few kilometers from the center, to the east of the capital, the most exuberant nature surprises travelers with extensive sandbanks like those at Juan Dolio or Boca Chica; nature parks where you can discover the rich biodiversity of the island, like at Los Tres Ojos National Park or the Dunes of Baní, and coasts of coral reefs like that of Isla Saona. And be sure not to forget the picturesque fishing villages where you can enjoy a delicious recently caught fish, fried, or the unique “creole cuisine.”
