Seeing New York in 5 days is possible if you plan it well. This guide suggests a plan for visiting the most outstanding locations in the city, combining iconic attractions with fascinating neighbourhoods and some of the most interesting locations.
Day 1 in New York
The Big Apple is the perfect city for a break and also the city that never sleeps. The first day is organised to help you feel the pulse of New York from the moment you arrive.
Times Square
The ideal place to start your New York adventure. The giant screens and non-stop activity make it a must-see for any visitor. As it’s a public area, you can visit 24 hours a day.
Just a few blocks from Times Square is Bryant Park, offering a green respite from the city hustle and bustle. Ideal for relaxing and watching life go by in the big city. In winter it’s home to an ice rink, and in summer to an open-air cinema.
Next to Bryant Park lies the fascinating New York Public Library and reading rooms, which are always worth a visit. Entrance is free and it opens from Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm. Don't miss the Rose Main Reading Room.
Grand Central railway station with its classical architecture and famous starry ceiling is also a must. Open every day of the year from 5:30am to 2am. There’s also a choice of restaurants and markets.
Rockefeller Center and the Top of the Rock
An iconic building, especially in winter thanks to its ice rink and large Christmas tree. You can also visit the shops and enjoy the sculptures and general atmosphere.
The Top of the Rock observatory has one of the best panoramic views of the city at sunset. Open from 9am to 11pm. Last entry at 10:10pm. Entrance: $40 (around €35).
Day 2 visiting Manhattan
On day two you can see the contrast between nature in Central Park and the elegance of Fifth Avenue. A perfect way to immerse yourself in the New York lifestyle and its most cinematic locations.
Central Park
This famous park has featured in numerous films, series and books, and offers pathways, lakes and rest areas. Explore some of its most iconic corners for free from 6am to 2am.
Central Park is a must if you visit New York, and a place where you can easily spend the whole day. But if you're short on time, you must see:
• Bethesda Fountain: one of the most photogenic locations, next to the lake.
• Bow Bridge: the most romantic bridge in the park, perfect for photos.
• Strawberry Fields: the most romantic bridge in the park, perfect for photos.
A stroll down 5th Avenue
Stroll down this famous avenue to see luxury shops, amazing window displays, iconic buildings and St. Patrick's Cathedral, a gothic oasis among the skyscrapers. Admission is free.
Day 3: Famous museums and districts
On the third day you can learn more about Manhattan's culture, art and diversity. Visit iconic museums and districts, while also seeing the most artistic side of the city.
Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met)
This vast art collection is a must, ranging from ancient Egypt to modern art. Ideal for spending at least a morning. Open from 10am to 5pm. Entrance: $30 (around €26).
High Line and Chelsea Market
This elevated park was created out of a former railway line, and now offers a lovely walk with city views and outdoor art. Open from 7am to 10pm. Free entrance. Take a break at the Chelsea Food Market for a snack or just to continue your tour of New York.
Greenwich Village and SoHo
This bohemian area is perfect for a walk. With tree-lined streets, bookstores, jazz clubs and cafes, it was the cradle of the countercultural movement and home to artists such as Bob Dylan.
SoHo is known for its galleries, boutiques and cast-iron architecture. Good place to buy clothes, art or just wander around.
MoMA
Home to modern art masterpieces such as The Starry Night by Van Gogh or The Young Ladies of Avignon by Picasso. Open from 10:30am to 5:30pm, Fridays until 9pm. Entrance: $25
Day 4: Visit the Statue of Liberty
On your penultimate day in New York, visit famous monuments and the financial district, so often seen on TV.
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
Take the ferry from Battery Park to visit these symbols of immigration and freedom. Ferries operate from 9am to 3:30pm. Entrance with access to the pedestal: $24.50 (€21.30). Includes audio guide and entrance to both attractions.
Wall Street
Walk through the financial district and take a picture of the famous Wall Street bull. The New York Stock Exchange is not open to the public, but the atmosphere of the area is worth it.
9/11 Memorial
Pay tribute to the victims of the September 11 attacks at this iconic memorial next to One World Trade Center. Open from 10am to 5pm. Museum entrance: $26 (around €23). Access to the outdoor part of the monument is free.
Day 5: Brooklyn and its hidden corners
The journey ends by crossing to the other side of the East River. Brooklyn offers a different kind of scenery, lovely neighbourhoods, and the finest views back over the Manhattan skyline.
Cross the Brooklyn Bridge on foot
A wonderful experience to end a perfect trip. Walk from Manhattan over to Brooklyn to see one of the most photogenic views. When you get to Brooklyn, explore the Dumbo neighbourhood between the bridges, offering galleries, shops and one of the best views of Manhattan. Take a photo from Washington Street with the Empire State Building between the bridge's pillars.
Brooklyn Heights Promenade
An elevated walkway with spectacular views of Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. An ideal viewpoint for sunset.
Prospect Park
A large park with picnic areas and pathways. Designed by the same planners as Central Park, it’s a green oasis with picnic areas, lakes and trails. Open from 5am to 1pm. Admission free.
Brooklyn Botanical Garden
An oasis of peace with themed gardens. Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm. Entrance costs $18 (and is free on Fridays before midday).
What you mustn't miss
• A Broadway Musical: book your tickets in advance or try your luck at the TKTS ticket booths for discounts.
• A game or concert at Madison Square Garden: check what’s on in advance depending on your travel dates.
• A helicopter ride or cruise on the Hudson River: a great way to see the city from a different angle.
• Neighbourhoods with a very local flavour: Chinatown, Little Italy and Harlem offer exceptional experiences, delicious food and plenty of history.
Tips for visiting New York
Like any other city with so many places to visit, a successful trip to New York depends on good planning. It's not just the entry requirements, the need to get an ESTA or booking your hotel. It’s also about knowing how to get around, the opening hours of places you want to visit, and the tours you want to do.
How to get around the city
• Metro: the quickest and cheapest way. Use a MetroCard (7 days unlimited travel: $34, about €29.50) or pay per ride ($2.90, about €2.52).
• Walking: check what’s on in advance depending on your travel dates.
• Uber and taxis: great at night or for longer journeys, but more expensive.
