DO I NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE IF TRAVELING TO ITALY?
The Italian national healthcare system provides emergency medical care free of charge in emergency rooms of public hospitals. EU citizens with European Health Insurance Cards can access state-provided healthcare at reduced costs or sometimes for free, depending on the type of care required. Most medical practitioners such as GPs and dentists, as well as private hospitals, expect payment upfront. Before traveling, find out what services your health insurance covers to ensure you’re reimbursed in the event of unexpected medical treatment. Private hospitals can be expensive, so health insurance is recommended. As with all traveling, many insurance policies cover potentially hazardous activities such as motorcycling and watersports. IS IT DANGEROUS FOR MY HEALTH TO VISIT ITALY?
Sicily is a low-risk country in terms of health safety. Officially, travelers do not require any vaccinations. However, MMR, Tetanus-Diphtheria and Influenza vaccinations are recommended. -
HOW DO YOU PAY IN ITALY?
Sicily’s official currency is the Euro. It’s advisable to exchange some money before departing as airport ATMs have been known to run out of cash during busy arrival times. While exchange bureaus are present in most tourist areas, the rates tend to be pricier than back home. ATMs are widely available, and most places accept MasterCards and Visa Credit Cards, however, because some museums and smaller establishments might only accept cash, it's recommended tourists carry a few Euros with them. In general, traveler's cheques can be difficult and time-consuming to cash in. When it comes to service, tips are usually automatically added to the restaurant bill, so tipping isn’t necessary but if need be adding up to 10% of the total bill is considered acceptable. In restaurants, paying for bread appetizers and a cover charge is standard practice. Leaving small change for taxi drivers, coffee baristas and bartenders is common. -
