Iron Men in Riviera Maya, Mexico

Cancun, Mexico, will host the sixth edition of the Ironman Cancun 2011 on Sunday September 18th as part of qualifying events held previously to the World Championship. Fifteen hundred athletes from all over the world will compete to win one of the 50 slots available to participate in the world’s championship which will be held in Clearwater, Florida, on September 2012.
Ironman 70.3, also known as a Half Ironman, is one of a series of middle-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC). The "70.3" refers to the total distance in miles (113.0 km) covered in the race, consisting of a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, a 56-mile (90 km) bike ride, and a 13.1-mile (21.1 km) run. The competition is divided into different categories: by sex and age, from 18 to 75 years old, relays (male, female and mixed couples), and elite. The first three from each category will receive a trophy while 50,000 dollars will be divided amongst the first places of the elite division. Just like the original Ironman competition, the 70.3 series features qualifying events in different countries, ending in the World’s Championship with those athletes who have ranked the highest.
