Oviedo

The Oviedo City Council covers an area of 185.14 sq km and is situated in central Asturias, strategically located between the Nalón and Nora Rivers. The maximum height is the Monte Picayu of 709 meters.
The monks Máximo and Fromestano founded the city in 761, choosing this hill in the center of Asturias that would become a hub of urban life, commercial, ecclesiastical and military life for over 1200 years.
Today Oviedo is the capital of the Principality of Asturias and is a university and administrative services city. Trade has become the key economic sector. Today it is a city with a notable, international projection through the Prince of Asturias Award, given annually at the Campoamor Theatre and the International Campus, attended by personalities of the highest global relevance.
The Oviedo citizens take great pride in their city, rehabilitating old monuments and facades, creating areas of natural parks throughout the city and maintaining the general appearance of the city. Oviedo has been awarded both nationally and internationally for its clean streets and the consciousness of its citizens.

WHAT TO DO

  • The Cathedral, with its impressive tower is the center of the old town of Oviedo. The square is surrounded by a set of noble buildings among which includes the chapel of the Balesquida, which originated in the thirteenth century. To the left, the House of Llanes, XVIII century Baroque building, stands next to the Palacio de la Rua and the Marquis de Santa Cruz, S. XV, which is the oldest civil building in the city that survived the 1522 fire that devastated Oviedo.
  • Camino de Santiago: Alfonso II was the first pilgrim to Compostela and his itinerary was the first Camino de Santiago: from Oviedo, capital city of the kingdom, by Grade, Salas, La Spina, Tineo, Pola de Allande and large Salime. El Camino was created and the center of the city of Oviedo was a very important part of it, which also hosted a number of relics, including the famous Shroud, rescued and brought to Oviedo from Jerusalem and guarded in a chapel built by King Alfonso II that is now the Santa House.
  • Oviedo has an important opera season at the Teatro Campoamor. The first edition was held in 1948. Throughout its history the most famous operatic titles by authors such as Verdi, Puccini, Wagner were showcased with the participation of the most famous singers: Alfredo Kraus, Plácido Domingo, Lucciano Pavarotti, Montserrat Caballé ...
  • The City of Oviedo holds a wide theater program throughout the year: autumn cycle, spring cycle, Asturian custom theater, etc. These shows take place at the Teatro Campoamor and the Theatre and Philharmonic (both municipal ownership) for large productions and alternative spaces for simple entertainment, such as Fontan Square, or the Trubia Theatre-Casino. Some of the best actors in the country have been a part of the theatre in Oviedo and have represented the most prestigious authors: Shakespeare, Brecht, Buero Vallejo ..
  • There are several museums that allow you to discover the cultural richness of Oviedo: the Archaeological Museum, located in the cloister of the Benedictine monastery of San Vicente since 1952, which contains archaeological remains from prehistory, the culture of the Castros, Romanization, Pre-Romanesque Asturian ethnography, heraldry, epigraphy, numismatics ...; the Museum of the Church of Oviedo, opened in 1990, located in the Upper Senate called on the Gothic cloister of the Cathedral of San Salvador de Oviedo; and the Camara Santa, Miz in the Chapel of St. Michael's Cathedral of San Salvador de Oviedo, that was dedicated to the worship space, located high on the Crypt of Santa Leocadia. It is also the only building that remains "reformed" of the original buildings that formed the original core of the City of Oviedo.
  • The most important shopping center of Oviedo is Uria Street and surrounding axis where many banks, insurance companies, department stores other shops are located.
  • The capital of the Principality of Asturias is a city in which many types of cuisines are displayed: Mexican Restaurants, Italian, French, Lebanese ... all available in the capital of the principality. And of course, the traditional Asturian cooking can be found in many restaurants.  One must try the “fabada,” made with large and fine beans from the farm, accompanied by tasty sausages. The cold water fish and red Cantabrian meats from cattle raised in the mountain pastures are also worth a lunch or dinner.
