- Palermo, the capital, is one of the oldest cities in human civilization for centuries, exposed to the cultural crossroads of East and West. The city is home of artistic and cultural testimonies of extraordinary value. Highlight the many Arab and Baroque monuments and the Norman cathedral, and the inside of the Palazzo dei Normanni, home to spectacular Byzantine mosaics.
- Enna, is the main town of the island in the interior. Near the city is the Lake Pergusa, that has become a nature reserve, and Piazza Armerina, with medieval baroque influences and a spectacular Roman villa. Catania, located on the coast at the foot of Mount Etna is a city with an ancient history despite the ongoing eruptions that have destroyed it many times. It is worth visiting the historical center with the baroque cathedral devoted to the patron saint, Saint Agatha, and the source of the elephant, the Roman monument that became a symbol of the city.
- Other towns include Cefalù with its Duomo of S. XII, Erice, a medieval city, Monreale, whose cathedral is one of the great monuments of Norman Sicily, Caltagirone, famous for its palace from the XVI century and a fantastic ceramic staircase. The largest volcano in Europe is on this island: the Etna: 3,323 meters high and still active. Located near the city of Catania, the park can be visited all year and visitors may get up close to the steaming craters. It is said that the Greek cities of Sicily are the most beautiful of the Hellenic world. These include Agrigento with its Valley of the Temples (S. V BC), Selinunte, with eight churches (S. VI and V BC), Segesta, with a major Doric temple in the top of a hill, Syracuse, where each summer there are numerous shows in its huge Greek theater, Milazzo, which was one of the first Greek colonies stretched to the Aeolian archipelago, and Taormina, with the remains of a Greek theater.
